Insomnia and poor sleep can affect your health and your life!!

It is not uncommon these days to hear patients or people tell us that they are having a hard time sleeping. The economy, family, money issues, even jobs and increased work stress can all contribute to the occasional poor nights sleep. But if it is a regular problem, then your health and your lifestyle may suffer. Ever notice how weak, tired or even run down you may feel after just one night if decrease sleep? Try doing it for a few days in a row and you are likely to get sick with a cold or virus.

Our bodies have an internal, natural clock which promotes a regular sleep cycle, but when this cycle is disturbed, this is where the person experiences insomnia. The definition of insomnia is the difficulty in initiating and/or maintaining sleep. The effects of sleep deprivation are cumulative and have profound effects on memory, learning, reasoning, reaction time, and what we refer to as “executive functioning”  How can you pay attention, think and remember if you are exhausted?

It has been found that many children who were labeled ADHD were actually sleep deprived children.  When these children start sleeping the appropriate length of time, many of the ADHD symptoms go away.  Adult sleep deprivation can have a negative impact on family, society, and the workplace.

Sleep deprived adults are very inefficient and at times unsafe.  They have more accidents, lose productive work time, and have been known to cause disasters in industrial settings.  In addition sleep deprivation is a contributing factor to depression and anxiety.

Why is that? It is at night during the deep states of recuperative sleep, that your body repairs from the stress of the days prior. Go to the gym? it is at night that your muscles repair and get stronger, not in the gym. The foods you eat, healthy or not are used to repair your body while you are sleeping.

If you are not sleeping well, you cannot completely or efficiently repair and heal. Hence you cannot be healthy and function up to your potential. While that might not seem important in the short term, the long term consequences are devastating. Most chronic issues and diseases cannot be addressed without a good nights sleep.

So what can you do about it?

1. Over the counter or prescription medications to help you sleep. The problem with them, is that they can become habit forming and may then lose their effect over time, and more may be needed, or you may not be able to fall asleep without them.

2. Psychotherapy to reduce stress. This helps a great deal, but can be expensive, and can take months to years to gain the benefit you are trying to achieve.

3. Change your mattress, improve the position you sleep in, put a pillow between your knees, or under them, darken your room, and take a protein shake before bed are also great ways to improve your sleep.

4. Neuro biofeedback: This is a system / technique that helps to retrain your brain. Depending on what you are doing, your brain has a certain wave or brain pattern. When you read, it should be focused, when you close your eyes, it should be relaxed.  Many times, brain waves can become disregulated, or out of order for what ever reason. Trauma, stress, medication, computers, florescent lighting,  or even the high paced information age we live in can disrupt how our brains function.

This can lead to insomnia or poor sleeping patterns. Many people can be diagnosed as having insomnia without knowing it. These are often people who have a very hard time falling asleep, or can fall asleep but cannot stay asleep. They may also wake multiple times per night, and wake up feeling just as exhausted as when they went to bed. These are common signs of dysregulated sleep patterns.

Biofeedback systems like the Braincore system help to retrain your brain to fire correctly at the right times. It incorporates multiple sensory stimulation like visual, auditory, tactile, and visceral control to retrain your brain on a permanent, and effective basis.

BUT… how do you know if this technique will help? An EEG scan of your brain is necessary to see if you qualify as a candidate for this procedure. Some are not, but those that are, do very well. We carefully screen clients before embarking on a corrective program, so we can obtain optimum results without wasting peoples time or hard earned money.
Not sleeping can lead to many health conditions, feeling run down and cranky, as well as condtions like fibromyalgia, and chrinic fatigue syndrome. Headaches, hormonal imbanaces are also a common symptom of poor sleep. So are aches and pains where the body tissues cannot heal.

Braincore / neuro – biofeedback systems that can retrain your brain to become properly regulated can make all the difference in the world as well as how you feel.

The worst things you can do for lower back pain…

As a chiropractor in Parkland, I see a great deal of people suffering with lower back pain. Many times you can actually increase pain when you are trying home remedies to reduce it.

Neck and back pain

I know there are tons of things people can do for lower back pain, and everyone has a friend, family member, or co-worker that swears by a secret remedy, or technique for getting rid of the pain, but they may not be best for you in all situations. Some methods can be good, and some are well… not so good – or can cause more long term damage.

Lower back pain can stop you in your tracks, keep you from moving, or make everyday tasks like getting in and out of a car, a slow and painful process. Most people will experience it at some point their lives, but knowing what to do about it can make all the difference… or create more pain and damage.

Some people apply HEAT the minute they experience lower back pain, or stay under a hot shower to “loosen up” the muscles. The only problem is in the first 48 hours, heat can cause more swelling because they dilate (widen) blood vessels which can cause more swelling and lead to more pain.

For an initial injury, ICE is recommended. If used incorrectly, ice can cause more pain and swelling too!!! Many people fall asleep on an ice pack, or leave it on for way too long. This has the same affect as using heat by causing swelling and more pain! The rule of thumb is no more than 15-20 minutes. As soon as the ice starts to feel good… take it off!!!

One of the most common bad ideas I often hear is… “I thought it would go away on it’s own.” People often neglect to help themselves, and actually make things worse. What might have taken a few treatments, can take many more if a person does not nip it in the bud right away.

It is extremely rare that lower back pain is caused by a nerve being pinched by a bone. Most lower back pain is felt as the muscles spasm, cramp, and tighten around swollen and sore joints where a nerve is being irritated. Swelling and surrounding spasm is what you feel protecting you from further damage or injury.

Most of those nerves are irritated by a misalignment (subluxation) of the bone above or below that nerve. This can also cause the discs to swell, bulge, or herniate. Disc issues are usually the result of a long standing misalignment or trauma which can cause a nerve irritation.

Chiropractic is the preferred method of treatment for disc conditions and subluxations. Injections or surgery should only be used last, if nothing else works! Chiropractors are the only doctors trained to locate and specifically correct subluxations with adjustments.

If you have lower back pain it may be related to a misalignment. If you or someone you know is suffering with lower back pain, please let them know we want to help them. Have them call our office to make an appointment at 954.340.7545 to schedule an exam and see what the true source of their pain is.

It is almost the end of the year, and many of you may have met your deductible, so now is a great time to get the care you need, and have much of the cost covered by your insurance. This can include massage therapy and acupuncture!!! We also serve patients in Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, and Deerfield, as well as other cities in south Florida.

Cars and Bodies – The Maintenance guild

It is sad to me that people often take better care of their cars and their homes than they do their own bodies. I believe they do this because they fear of having a large car repair bill, or may have to replace an expensive appliance. Unfortunately people fail to maintain their bodies as they ignore small warning signs (headaches, aches, pains, cramps, soreness, tiredness, lack of energy, lack of sex drive) , or wait until there is a major problem.

Imagine owning a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Bentley.  These high end, performance machines require a great deal of care to run and look at top performance. Would you neglect one of these $250,000 cars until a light came on the dash? I would hope not.

Maintaining an  expensive, one of a kind, car is how you should care for your body. If you leave it outside without protection it rusts and deteriorates and quickly falls apart.

Here are the directions to taking care of your Car & Body. They were both designed by a pro. There is no warranty, (insurance) and the expenses are all yours.  One missing section will create an expensive repair.

1. CAR: Lube and Oil all moving parts regularly

    BODY: Chiropractic

2. CAR: Check the engine (Heart or a car)

BODY: Have a physical, EKG, heart, Stress test

3. CAR: Check the hoses often for hardening or leaks

BODY: Check Blood Vessels, look for bruises, blood in urine, feces, maintain good nutrition to support the hoses (blood vessels) of your body

4.  CAR: Wash, wax, pollish the exterior body to get rid of dirt, tar, and muck, prevent rust

BODY: Massage, exfoliate, hydrate, and clean regularly to get rid of wastes, dead skin, and improve circulation, and lymphatics.

5.  CAR: Flush the cooling systems  Waiting too long to clean out may result in premature rusting. Maintain fluids (oil, brake, tranmission, coolant)

BODY: Drink lots of clean water, amino acids, omega fatty acids, and vitamins. 1-2 times per year – herbal or juice cleansing detoxification

6. CAR: Only put it High Octane, high Quality fuel / gas, if not expect knocking, and low output, while gumming up the engine.

BODY: Put only high quality foods, or suffer with low energy, sluggishness, and gumming up the arteries and blood vessels (high cholesterol, plaque, and diseases)

7. CAR: Drive!!! A wonderful car that sits in the garage, will deteriorate as will a car left out in the weather. Drive it well for at least an hour per day. If you do all the above and miss this step, all the bearings, hinges and tires will rapidly fall apart.  The drive lubricates the chassis, maintains the oil viscosity, keeps the tires full and pliable.  Leave it in the garage for year and your investment will depreciate.

BODY: Exercise for at least 1 hour per day. Try to make some of it uncomfortable by pushing your self harder than you thought (faster, heavier), that is how you grow, and get stronger / better.

8. CAR: Open the windows, and air it out, or put the top down.

BODY: Keep an open mind! Pray, meditate, and clear out your head!

9. General rules and guidelines…If you need a tow, call a professional (ambulance).  If you want to avoid the wrecker, see your mechanics regularly (MD, DDS,DPM, DC etc).  For optimum performance see your chiropractor regularly for spinal and extremity adjustments (wheel and chasis alignment with lube) which will give you better wear and tear on your spine, joints, and discs.  I highly recommend that you get washed and waxed / lubed in a massage or physical therapy, and buffed /polished with skin care and lotions / exfoliation .  In new and older cars /bodies it is very important to add some quality fuel additives (vitamins, minerals and omega fatty acids) . Choose the safest ones with the least pollution first  (vitamins, enzymes, herbs).  If they don’t work try stronger additives (over the counter medications, or stronger prescription drugs), but try to avoid except as the last resort.

An ounce of prevention is worth of pound of cure for both cars and bodies.

I came up with the quote below, and it is very fitting for this post:

“Your body is the only vehicle you will have for the journey of life. Take care of it and enjoy the ride.”

Better sleeping positions for neck, shoulder, and back pain

Many of my Parkland chiropractic patients ask me what is the best position to sleep in to reduce lower back pain, neck pain, and shoulder pain. this can become extremely important after an injury or car accident, where the neck has sustained a whiplash injury when it can be hard to get comfortable. Here is a video to help you find the best nights sleep.

While there is no one answer, there are several suggestions that may help you get a better nights sleep right away.

Many recommend sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees. I believe this is a great position, but there are some drawbacks. It leaves a great deal of compression onto the shoulder that you sleep on and this can lead to shoulder and neck pain by affecting the alignment of the clavicle, scapula, and neck. Many people use  a pillow that is too soft or small allowing the neck to flop to one side, or worse they use 2 or big pillows jacking your head up causing neck pain.

Others recommend sleeping on your back, bu this too can have consequences. Many use a big, or too many pillows causing the head to flex forward pulling on the neck and upper back, as well as it can affect posture. If you are going to sleep on your back, use a thin / soft pillow or even a small hand towel rolled up under your neck, and keep a medium to thick pillow under your knees to reduce pressure in your lower back.

Stomach sleeping is not recommended by anyone I know, but it can be a hard habit to break. As a bare minimum, have a body or thick king sized pillow under one side of your body so that you are angled, and not flat on your stomach with your head turned.

The number one sleeping position i recommend to patients is a bit complicated, but it works. If you get confused, please watch my video embedded in this blog.

Have 4 pillows one for your head, one for you legs, and one on each side of you. Start by laying on your side, with a pillow between your legs, and lay back on the pillow behind you. If you switch sides in the middle of the night lay back on the pillow on the other side. You should have a square of pillows around you, and while it is not the most romantic set up for your partner or spouse, it does allow for a more restful nights sleep with less aches and pains.

Chiropractic care saves money…

Neck and back pain

Study Finds That for Low Back Pain,
Starting with Chiropractic Saves 40% on Care
by the ACA’s “Week in Review” of 11/12/10

A new study finds that care for low back pain initiated with a doctor of chiropractic (DC) saves 40 percent on health care costs when compared with care initiated through a medical doctor (MD), the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) announced today. The study, featuring data from 85,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield beneficiaries, concludes that insurance companies that restrict access to chiropractic care for low back pain treatment may inadvertently pay more for care than they would if they removed such restrictions.
Low back pain is a significant public health problem. Up to 85 percent of Americans have back pain at some point in their lives. In addition to its negative effects on employee productivity, back pain treatment accounts for about $50 billion annually in health care costs making it one of the top 10 most costly conditions treated in the United States.
Published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT), the new study, “Cost of Care for Common Back Pain Conditions Initiated With Chiropractic Doctor vs. Medical Doctor/Doctor of Osteopathy as First Physician: Experience of One Tennessee-Based General Health Insurer,” looked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee’s intermediate and large group fully insured population over a two-year span. The insured study population had open access to MDs and DCs through self-referral, and there were no limits applied to the number of MD/DC visits allowed and no differences in co-pays.
Results show that paid costs for episodes of care initiated by a DC were almost 40 percent less than care initiated through an MD. After risk-adjusting each patient’s costs, researchers still found significant savings in the chiropractic group. They estimated that allowing DC-initiated episodes of care would have led to an annual cost savings of $2.3 million for BCBS of Tennessee.
“As doctors of chiropractic, we know firsthand that our care often helps patients avoid or reduce more costly interventions such as drugs and surgery. This study supports what we see in our practices every day,” said ACA President Rick McMichael, DC. “It also demonstrates the value of chiropractic care at a critical time, when our nation is attempting to reform its health care system and contain runaway costs.”
The full study is available online and will appear in print in the December issue of JMPT. A subscription to JMPT is an ACA member benefit.

Many people are discovering the benefits of chiropractic, in more than just pain relief. They are finding it in their wallets. Chiropractic care costs less than conventional care for lower back pain. We encourage you to look into chiropractic care if you are suffering with pain. If you live in Parkland Florida, we would be happy to see if you are a candidate for such treatment.

Martial Arts & Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, and Acupuncture

Martial arts and chiropractic…
Martial artists Need chiropractic too!

Professional martial artists use chiropractic, massage therapy and acupuncture

Why would a martial artist want to be under chiropractic care, acupuncture or even massage therapy? There are many reasons, some are obvious, and some are not. Obviously they would seek out such care after an injury, or accident while training. Many people who push their bodies to their limits complain of lower back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, headaches, as well as extremity pains like elbows, knees, ankles, and feet. Flexibility and conditioning play a major role in limiting such problems. Other causes can be related to improper warming up, stretching and over exertion, even dehydration.

Less obvious, but equally important reasons include maintaining proper alignment of spinal and extremity joints to avoid injuries, and problems, particularly with the lumbar and cervical discs in the spine. Discs are semi gelatinous and fibrous cushions that act as shock absorbers between the bones. If there is a misalignment above or below a discs, it will cause it to wear out faster than it was designed, and increases the risk of it swelling, or tearing.

Extremity joints are especially important to make sure they are aligned. Many strikes, blocks and kicks can affect wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees, hips, and feet. Not to mention those art forms like jiu jitsu that involve joint locks.

Muscles should be maintained at their normal resting length with massage therapy, trigger point therapy and other massage techniques. They need this because as people train, work, sit, or stress out, muscle become tight and get stuck that way. Massage Therapy helps to reduce the effect of that, allowing better flexibility, improved joint mobilization, and it feels great.

Acupuncture is a form of ancient medicine that has been around, and has not changed in over 5,000 years. It makes sure the known energy paths of the body are flowing properly so it can function and repair quickly and efficiently. Many striking points in various martial arts affect such points, and repetitive strikes, and blocks can affect them, leading to poor health or problems.

Regardless of the style performed, many people suffer with injuries from time to time and throughout their career. That does not mean training is dangerous or should be avoided, but here are some easy things you can do to stay out of trouble.

  1. Warm up! Most people do that wrong, they simply stretch cold muscles not ready to be worked or stretched. It is best to have a war up routine that includes active movements, and stretches, to improve circulation and to get the muscles warmed up. Even a couple minutes of cardio, bouncing, fast walking, running, or jump roping will achieve such a goal. Ballistic stretching where bouncing is involved should be avoided, as that is one of the fastest ways to injure muscles and joints.
  2. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluid before, during and after training. Water is best, but if you are performing extensive training in hot environments, electrolytes are very important to consume.
  3. Know your limits: Always try to improve and excel, but never over do it, or push yourself to the point of injury. Leave your ego at the door, and train to improve, not to prove anything!

Make sure your body is properly cared for under chiropractic care, massage therapy, and acupuncture. In the heart of Parkland, we have martial artists who seek our care from neighboring cities, and as far as Hollywood  and West Palm Beach, and as close as Coconut Creek, because of the in depth techniques we offer. Some are karate styles,  Thai, Israeli reality fighting styles like Haganah, while others are MMA style fighters. Regardless of the style, if you want to have a long career developing you body and skills, caring for you body is essential. Please feel free to call or schedule a consultation to see how you can take your training to the next level. (954) 340-7545. To learn more go to our website: www.PHandWC.com
